A Void: a book without the letter "E"

‘E’ is the most commonly used letter in the alphabet. That’s why it’s so hard to believe that a whole novel exists without a single use of the letter ‘e’.

The book in question was originally written in French in 1969, by author Georges Perec. La Disparition (The Disappearance) is a 300-page lipogrammatic novel – a kind of book that consists of constrained writing or a word game.

There is absolutely no mention of ‘e’ throughout all 300 pages, except the author’s name of course. Even the most common word of the French language, ‘le’ (which means the), makes no appearance at all. La Disparition was later translated into English by Gilbert Adair, with the title A Void.

Georges says that he was careful not to let the word puzzle overpower the story. The book itself is an elaborate metafictional word puzzle, and a parody of noir and horror fiction. Georges employs several stylistic tricks, gags, plot twists, and finally, a grim conclusion.

The plot of ‘A Void’ follows a group of people looking for their missing companion, Anton Vowl. Vowl is a middle-aged scholar who shares the author’s liking for wordplay. Slowly, with the help of the clues left behind by Vowl, his friends figure out which symbol is missing, but aren’t comfortable discussing it. Anyone who risks talking about it could be fatally injured.

Georges keeps the book alive with antic humor. And there’s something for the reader as well – to find a solution to the logogriph, the world puzzle. The book is littered with hints such as the absence of chapter five. If you love solving puzzles and linguistic gymnastics, this is one book you cannot miss.

French Cafe Charges Extra for Rudeness

The French aren’t exactly world-famous for being polite, which is why I was quite surprised when I read about this. A French Café is actually charging customers extra for being rude to its staff, and offering discounts to those who are nice.

The Petite Syrah Café, located in the French Riviera city of Nice, has the new pricing scheme on display. If you walk in and simply ask for “A coffee,” you will be charged €7 ($9.5). For “A coffee please,” the price is much lower – €4.25 ($6). And if you decide to go the distance and say, “Hello, a coffee please,” that will make the folks at the Petite Syrah so happy they’ll only charge you €1.40 ($2).

The concept is so awesome – I think it’s a win-win. I’m sure the patrons love $2 coffees; they’d keep coming back for more and be polite each time. It’s great for business and makes a nice work environment, so the staff at the café must be happy too.

Guy Spends a Year Tracking Down Woman He Met Last New year’s Eve after She Tells Him “Find Me”

25-year-old New Zealander, Reese McKee, started a social media campaign that fired the imagination of thousands of romantics on the internet. His plea for help in locating the whereabouts of his soul-mate went viral within hours. In fact, he had to delete the campaign because it all started to spiral out of control.

In his original campaign, Reese said that he met a girl on New Year’s Eve, 2012, in Hong Kong. He spotted her crying alone on the side of a road; she was lost and couldn’t find her friends. “I just cheered her up,” Reese said. “I sort of have this undeniably bad sense of humor that no one can resist laughing at.” The two spent the night partying, dancing and talking, before the girl caught up with her friends again. As they parted, she told Reese that her name was ‘Katie’ and she was from DC. She let him take a picture of her, and left with these final words: “Find Me.”

The next morning, as Reese looked at Katie’s photograph on his phone, a flood of great memories came back to him and he was determined to find her. Unfortunately, he couldn’t remember the e-mail address she’d given him, so he decided to turn to Facebook for help.

“The chances are billions to one, but I like those odds. This is me putting all my chips on the table because it’s go hard or go home and I am not going to give in.” These words, apparently, were enough to touch the hearts of thousands of netizens, who began to frantically search for ‘Katie from DC’. They tracked down the real Katie in no time at all, and bombarded her with tons of messages. It all got so out of hand that Katie had to delete her social profile.

To make matters worse, Reese’s worldwide manhunt received widespread media attention. Although he refused to make an appearance on T.V., his story has been covered extensively. He admits that he didn’t realize his campaign could attract so much attention, and says that things quickly spiraled out of control.

“We found the girl,” said Reese. “She is from DC, she’s not there at the moment, but she’s sorta taken down all her public profiles for a bit.” The general impression is that Katie isn’t too happy about being found. But MailOnline has a different story to tell. They tracked down 20-year-old Katie, to get a statement from her. According to their reports, she’s very much single and is actually “waiting for him to get in touch.”

Lady Sif visits children's hospital

Jaimie Alexander plays Lady Sif in the Thor movies. She recently visited the Children's Hospital Los Angeles, but instead of going as Jaimie Alexander, she went as Lady Sif. Sword, armour, the works.

OK, so maybe it's not quite as cool as having Thor himself turn up, but it's still pretty damn cool. Especially since that sword looks kinda real.

The Unbelievably Cute Blacknose Valais Sheep

The Valais Blacknose sheep are some of the cutest animals I’ve ever seen. On first glance, they don’t even look real; many people have mistaken them for well-crafted felt projects. I wonder why they aren’t more popular on the internet. They do have a Facebook fan page with over 3,500 likes, butI think they ought to be more well-known.

The Blacknose sheep originate in the Valais region of Switzerland. They are a dual-purpose breed, raised for wool as well as meat. Their most notable features – a black face, black ears, black knees and legs. The rest of their coat is stringy, white and unbelievably fluffy; you’d just want to cuddle up with them. But they’re a pretty tough breed.

The Valais Blacknose are a Heritage breed. These domesticated animals are well suited to live in the extreme climatic conditions of the high mountains and are good at grazing on steep, rocky slopes. Each sheep weighs 80 to 100 kilos and produces about 4 kilos of wool a year. Their earliest mention dates back to 1400 A.D., but they were first recognized as a separate breed in 1962.

A girl is dating her way to top restaurants

A 23-year-old struggling actress from Canada is trying to prove you don’t have to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth to enjoy the finest cuisine Toronto restaurants have to offer. With a predestined name like Erin Wotherspoon, this Canadian foodie is on a mission to date any rich men who can afford to satisfy her appetite for gourmet food.

Burgers and fries? That’s not this girl’s idea of a fine meal, and to make sure she gets the best food money can buy, she goes out on fancy dinner dates with unsuspecting men and then ditches them. She wines and dines every night of the week with different gents and then spills the beans on her blog where she writes snippets of her usually-bad but sometimes-good dates. “I’ve got a pretty face and a pretty extensive Urban Spoon wish list. We all know that getting what you want in life can be tough. Which is why I’ve decided to let someone else finance my dreams. My dream? To eat in pretty restaurants without costing me a penny,” the introductory message on her site reads. Erin likes to chew and tell, and confirms that there is no such thing as a free meal, suggesting that readers should “follow me to learn who I screw over, bang and love as I navigate Toronto’s diners, drive-ins and dives.”

She also writes about her “victims”, who are usually unattractive men; A date with a unibrow-sporting gentleman and particularly bad dinner conversations are on Erin’s list of negative experiences, but it seems there’s nothing this girl can’t stomach in order to fulfill her ultimate goal – to sink her teeth into juicy, delicious elk tartar, foie gras or her favorite oysters. She finds her dates on various dating websites where she likes to take on different fictional names, depending on what type of men she wants to lure in. The actress even has an account on J Date – a Jewish dating site. “Willing to convert to Judaism for a good meal? umm YES,” she writes. Like taking candy from a baby.

Now that her secret is out, Erin Wotherspoon is really walking on thin ice, as some people have expressed their burning desire to dine and dash, leaving her with a huge check to pay. Something similar actually happened to her and it’s all documented on her blog. A man who she actually found interesting asked her to split the bill after showing her a picture from her site reading “Date Night! Oh wait, that’s every night…” But you can’t make an omelette without breaking some eggs and even after she paid her own bill, the two hit it off and made a night of it. Still, this serial dater has learned her lesson and says that from now on she plans on only going out with “guys who are fresh off the boat & literally have no friend based established in the country yet.” So, emigrants beware!

World's Biggest Burger Fan

For 57-year-old Harry Sperl of Daytona Beach, Florida, burgers are not only a tasty fast-food treat, but also representations of American popular culture that deserve a shrine. “They taste good, they look good and the hamburger is an icon of the United States of America”, explains Sperl. This is the reason why for the last 23 years, this burger enthusiast has been adding hundreds of items to the “Burgerbilia”, the world’s first (and, so far, only) burger museum, located in Sperl’s own home.

Sperl has been using burger memorabilia to decorate his house: he has a hamburger phone, a cheeseburger lamp and even a custom-made hamburger bed with little hamburger pillows. He also has custom carpets with hamburger designs, hamburger-shaped music boxes, erasers, clocks, trays and lots of magnets. Sperl’s passion began when he purchased some hamburger items from a toy store. From that moment on, not only did he start collecting items for the Burgerbilia from flea markets and garage sales, but he also designed his pride and joy – the Hamburger Harley, a unique hamburger-shaped tricycle, with onion wheels and pickle handles. He originally thought of using a Volkswagen Beetle, but he decided he didn’t like the sound of the air cooled flat 4 engines. Sperl then considered a hamburger dragster or a cheap go-cart, but in the end his love for Harley Davidson got the best of him.

Woman Decides to Live in the Victorian Era

While some people want to make the most of technology by adding more and more fancy gadgets to their daily lives, others simply prefer going back to the basics. Meet Sarah Chrisman, a 33-year-old Seattle resident who decided to ditch almost every aspect of modern life, from cooking to clothing, and embrace a Victorian-era lifestyle.

Although she has liked the stories from the Victorian age ever since she was a little girl, the big change took place just 4 years ago, when Sarah received a unique birthday present from her husband. “I have always loved the Victorian era, ever since I was a little girl. My first corset was given to me by my husband on my 29th birthday, and unexpectedly, I really thoroughly enjoyed it.” The feeling she had when wearing the corset determined her to change her lifestyle entirely: Sarah now wears custom-made Victorian clothes, tries not to use any appliances that didn’t exist in the Victorian age (such as the now mundane washing machine), gave up her car for a 100-years-old bike, she uses old fashioned cleaning methods instead of modern detergents and cooks using the recipes found in 19th century women’s magazines. That’s right, this modern-day Victorian woman enjoys the 1889 edition of Cosmopolitan, and because she considers her lifestyle very exciting, she even wrote a book, “Victorian Secrets. What a Corset Taught Me About the Past, the Present and Myself”. She also studied the Victorian age etiquette.

The people’s reaction to Sarah’s nowadays unconventional ways is usually a positive one, with very few exceptions. “People have mixed reactions. Some are enthusiastic and positive. The other day an old man ran out of a restaurant to tell me I made his day, he said: . But there are perfect strangers who find what I wear such a point of contention. Some women scream oppression — that I choose to wear a corset. But I focus on the positives. I don’t find it restricting at all, in fact I’d venture to say that it’s liberating to live how I want to!” Sarah chooses to explore only the bright side of the Victorian age. What you may not have known is that some ideas of today’s technology were born in those times. “As far as technology goes, people don’t realize how early a lot of technology came into being. You could say the Victorian internet was born in the 19th century. And in the 1870s, two inventors Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell independently designed the telephone. And the world’s first public electricity supply was provided in late 1881, when the streets of Godalming in the UK were lit with electric light”, Sarah explains.

Although Sarah and Gabriel have cut out or reduced the use of modern day technology, they are very much aware of the times they live in. “We can’t travel back, though we try.” But there is one aspect of modern life not even this Victorian-age lady can’t resist, Facebook. Yup, she has her own Facebook account.

Awesome Reading Nets for Libraries

This is the Reading Net designed by Spanish creative studio Playoffice. Of course I'm not sure how much credit Playoffice actually deserves. It's not like they invented nets, they just came up with the idea of hanging them in home libraries to give your kids a place to hang out and read the herpes-free books you've collected over the years.

Yin Yang Couple Bath Tub

This is the $55,000 Yin Yang Bathtub. It comes equipped with color lights, soundwave massage, and a distinct, squiggly barrier between you and your lova. It’s so couples can take a bath but not actually be in the same vessel of water. But! But that’s the best part of sharing a bath with someone: having the opportunity to ‘accidentally’ brush your privates/ass/elbow/foot/etc. against their privates/ass/elbow/foot/etc. under the water. You know what I’m talking about. It just gets so floaty in there you can’t control your limbs!

Today's Ridiculous Standard of Beauty

We’ve already seen how much makeup can do to transform an ordinary woman into a model even before Photoshop. But this video shows the entire process of turning this attractive woman into something completely unattainable, including make-up, hair, and image editing. So even with a team of people making sure the lighting is perfect and that not a single strand of hair is out of place, even she’ll never look the way she looks in the finished product. That’s because they’ve made her eyes bigger, her legs longer, ribcage smaller, neck longer—the list goes on.

StarPath: Glow-In-The-Dark Coating Lights Up the Walkway After Dark

Unless you're on a sidewalk next to a well-lit road, walking at night can be a bit frightening. With no light to see where you're going, sometimes you may need to carry a flashlight. This luminescent coating called Starpath solves that problem, by turning dark pathways into a glowing blue ribbons of light.

The coating is applied in three layers, with a middle aggregate stage that absorbs UV energy during the day, which is then released as a blue glow when it's dark. It's kind of like a high-tech version of those glow in the dark stickers you put on the walls of your room when you were a kid.

Manufacturer Pro-Teq Surfacing sees Starpath as a way for municipalities to save money, by replacing costly electric pathway lighting with the low-maintenance coating. Installing the surface takes only a few hours, leaving a durable coating that's slip and rain resistant.

So far Pro-Teq Surfacing has applied Starpath to a few walkways near their home base in Cambridge England. No word on whether they plan to market the system worldwide, or if something similar could be applied to roads in addition to footpaths. Personally, I'd like to see a yellow version so we could make a sparkly path to Emerald City.

Japanese Garlic Beer

Here’s some interesting news: a Japanese company has combined its popular dark beer with the pungent, intense flavor of black garlic, thus creating the unique and rather bizarre Aomori Garlic Black Beer.

Featuring a sleek black label with elegant golden writing, the black garlic-flavored beer bottle – which costs 630 yen ($6.5) – looks very appealing to any avid dark beer lover. The first sip of Aomori Garlic Black Beer doesn’t taste very different from any other quality black beer, but as the dark goes down your throat and into the stomach, the potent black garlic flavor starts to take over your mouth. Incredibly, those brave enough to actually try the Aomori Garlic Black Beer say the spicy, potent aftertaste is very addictive, making you want to drink more and more of the strange beverage.

Lose weight with this sausages and beer diet

What if you could eat your favorite food every day and still be able to lose weight? Believe it or not, such a thing is very much possible, and Evo Terro, and average guy from Arizona, is living proof. Despite stuffing his face with sausages and drinking cold beers all day, he is actually shedding his extra pounds.

Terro’s miracle diet consists of consuming only sausages and drinking up to six beers a day for the entire month of October in celebration of the popular Oktoberfest. Evo discovered the offbeat diet three years ago and has been using it to shed extra weight ever since. Last year, he managed to lose about 6 kg (14lbs) by munching on his favorite bratwursts and gulping beer – which add up to about 15,000 calories per week. “Most of it was body fat,” Terry Simpsons – his doctor, says. “His cholesterol went down by a third.” To make sure the diet is not harmful in any way, Terro’s health is being monitored by the supportive doctor. “We will do the labs to make sure your liver is doing fine, your lipids aren’t out of wack and your cholesterol is fine, blood chemistries are fine and I thought that was good supervision. We knew if something bad happened we would just shut it down,” the doctor explains.

Here's a scientific proof why you should eat popcorn in the cinema

A study by researchers at the Cologne Institute has determined that eating popcorn makes moviegoers at least somewhat immune to advertisements—for example, those godawful commercials that you’re forced to sit through before the movie starts. “Thank you for watching Regal FirstLook” my tuchus. Not like I have a choice, Regal.

The idea behind the study, published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology, is that whenever we hear a new name our tongue subconsciously practices its pronunciation, and that’s how commercials manage to imprint brand names onto our brain. But if we’re eating popcorn our mouths are already moving, so that process is interrupted. The researchers invited 96 people—half of whom got free popcorn, half of whom only got a small sugar cube that dissolved instantly in their mouths, poor guys—to watch a commercial/movie combo. The ads left no psychological impact on the popcorn group, but the sugar cube group found themselves with warm, fuzzy feelings toward Coke or Toyota or whatever the ads were for.

“The mundane activity of eating popcorn made participants immune to the pervasive effects of advertising… This finding suggests that selling candy in cinemas actually undermines advertising effects, which contradicts present marketing strategies. In the future, when promoting a novel brand, advertising clients might consider trying to prevent candy being sold before the main movie.”

A restaurant in Moscow only hires twins

A restaurant owner in Moscow promises you will have such a great time in his establishment that you are going to see double, not because of the strong vodka, but because the staff is made up exclusively of identical twin brothers and sisters.

Aptly called Twin Stars, the Russian restaurant employs only twin bartenders and wait staff as a gimmick to attract more customers and prides itself on being the only such restaurant in the world. Alexei Khodorovsky, the owner of Twin Stars, says he was inspired by a 1960s movie where a girl finds herself in a parallel universe and discovers there’s another version of her – her twin. The idea seems fun and both the customers and the twin staff say they’ve enjoyed the experience thus far. “We worked as barmen before this summer in a different establishment. It was an internship for us,” Artyem, who works with his identical brother Roman at the bar, says. We really liked that internship. That’s why we decided this profession suits us and we came here to work.” Finding people like Artyem and Roman was a true challenge. Identical pairs with experience working in a restaurant were very hard to track down, but the effort was worthwhile because as Nika, another member of the unique staff, says “One pair (of twins) is already fun – when there are two, it’s even more fun.”

Silent Dining Restaurant in New York

Do you remember how you always had to be quiet at the dinner table when you were young but never understood why? Now that you’re all grown up, with children of your own, you probably wish you could have just one more of those quiet dinners. If quiet is what you seek, you’re in luck, as now you can enjoy a four-course meal in complete silence at the Eat restaurant in Greenpoint, Brooklyn where you have to be quiet and enjoy the food, whether you like it or not.

Nicholas Nauman, head chef and curator of the silent-dinner experience, got the idea for the event during a trip to India where he admired the Buddhist monks having their breakfast every morning without uttering a word. In a competing market where restaurant owners are coming up with the most unusual concepts to attract customers – such as dining in pitch-dark, the 28-year-old thought this idea would gain popularity. “It’s just an opportunity to enjoy food in a way you might not have otherwise,” he says. This way, he hopes to “reconfigure the relationship between a space and food” by forcing customers to focus on their plates rather than on the countless distractions that occur while sitting at the dinner table.

The restaurant has already held two such monthly events which were fairly successful. When talking about the first experience, Nauman says “The energy of the presence of the people involved was really palpable and motivating to make the food really good. I didn’t know if afterwards people would say ‘Woah, dude – that was weird’ or be displeased and not want to pay.” Nobody really knew what to expect from this test run but Nauman was somehow positive everything would go well. The customers didn’t break the silence; one man even left the room when he felt like sneezing which is understandable since they were told they had to finish their meals on a bench outside if they didn’t respect the strict no talking rule/if they made so much as a noise. Furthermore, some customers found creative ways of communicating such as using facial expressions. “It’s kind of like a meditation,” Jordon Colon, the owner of Eat, says. “The silence speaks for itself.”

Living on $5000 a year in this Hobbit House

Meet Dan Price, a real life hobbit who has been living in his underground hole in Oregon for the past twenty years. He manages to survive with only $5,000 a year – $100 of which goes on the rent for the land he resides under – and doesn’t believe in “houses or mortgages.”

Dan used to be an office job type of guy, working as a photojournalist in order to support himself, his wife and their two kids and pay the mortgage on their house. He didn’t really give his life too much thought until he read a book by Harlan Hubbard which described an existence without the everyday commodities of modern life. After reading the book, Dan soon packed his bags and moved to a peaceful meadow where he tried out various housing options- a cabin, a flophouse and a tepee, before settling in the hobbit house he lives in today. The 8-foot hole in the ground barely accommodates Dan, a stove, his books, a CD player and some clothes, but it’s everything he really needs. Price, who wants to live a life without stress says “everything is at arm’s length when you are sitting there. It’s human scale. The idea is that you can see everything, no fumbling for stuff – that creates stress.”

300 Sandwiches for an Engagement Ring

New York Post journalist, Stephanie Smith, truly believes the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. After her boyfriend told her she is 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring, Stephanie got cooking and started a blog to document her progress. She is currently at sandwich #176.

Stephanie says her relationship to her boyfriend, “Alexander Skarsgård look-alike” Eric, has always been centered on food. They met at a restaurant, he cooked her dinner on their second date, and they’ve hosted numerous dinner-parties together, so she knew how important food was to him. And there was nothing he liked more than sandwiches. “To him, sandwiches are like kisses or hugs. Or sex,” the young journalist says. The two New-Yorkers had been going steady for about a year and even moved into a cozy apartment together, but Stephanie was wondering what it would take for Eric to finally pop the big question. She found the answer one day, after she made him her her first a turkey on whole wheat bread, with mustard, lettuce and swiss cheese. “Honey, this is the best sandwich ever!” Eric told her in between bites. When he was done, he dropped the bomb on her: “You’re, like, 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring.” That was it, the secret to the marriage proposal she had been dreaming of. Stephanie didn’t really know hot to cook, but she was willing to learn and she wasn’t one to back down from a challenge.

She started the 300-sandwich-challenge with an easy ice-cream sandwich and moved on from there, but at about ten sandwiches into the project, she realized things were moving at a slow pace. She was already in her mid 30′s and making just three sandwiches a week wasn’t going to wing her the engagement ring too soon. “How would I finish 300 sandwiches in time for us to get engaged, married and have babies before I exited my childbearing years?” she asked herself. So the young journalist stepped up her game, making snacks for breakfast, lunch and dinner and whenever she wanted to get herself out of the dog house. So far she has cooked 176 different sandwiches for Eric, and learned a whole lot about food in the process. Her creations have grown more complex with each month, but Stephanie says her boyfriend smiles and says “thank you” regardless of what’s on the menu. “You women read all these magazines to get advice on how to keep a man, and it’s so easy,” he told her. “We’re not complex. Just do something nice for us. Like make a sandwich.”

Stephanie says that the experience has brought her and Eric closer together. They enjoy doing the groceries together and planning dinners, and although Smith still wants a ring on her finger and live happily ever after, she says she has put a lot less pressure on the 300 sandwich race, instead enjoying every moment they spend together cooking.

You can buy a barrel of Jack Daniel's at Sam's Club

Wholesale warehouses are where it's at for pricey booze these days. $17,000 bottle of Macallan at Costco? How about an entire BARREL (and not the kind those awesome cheese balls come in) of whiskey at Sam's Club.

The barrel above was spied by Redditor domantor1 and, believe it or not, it's the bargain of the bunch. One of the first JD barrels spied was nearly $10,000, while another in Lincoln, Nebraska was spotted for almost $9000. Now obviously that's Ed Begley Jr.-type money, but it will last basically forever, especially if you're the type of responsible drinker who buys entire barrels of whiskey. So do yourself a favor and find a bunch of buddies with deep pockets to go sixteenth-skies with you on this thing.

Cheeseburger-Stuffed Crust Pizza in UK

These days, it seems everyone’s trying to have their cake and eat it too. Can’t decide if you want a salad or ice cream? No problem! Donut or croissant with your coffee? You got this. Pizza or Burger? Cheeseburger-Stuffed Crust Pizza, duh.

Pizza Hut UK is getting a limited-time Cheeseburger Pizza Crust featuring soft crust pockets filled with mini beef patties fixed with mozzarella cheese. The new item comes with a side of ketchup dip and can be covered with your favorite toppings.

If this novelty pie is giving you déjà vu, it’s because you seen it before. Last year, Pizza Hut locations in the Middle East got their own “Cheeseburger Crown Crust” pizza. Both versions are pretty similar, the only main difference being that the Middle East’s came drizzled in the chain’s “special sauce” and also offered a chicken fillet option.

This is what happens when you leave a job at Arby's

After four long, roast beef-soaked years of working at her local Arby’s, Redditor chopieseeves was ready to throw away her name tag and move on to bigger and better things. The food service industry, as far as we know, has been good to chopie: She met her future maid of honor (also a coworker at Arby’s) during her stint and she was able to support herself while she earned a degree in veterinary technology.

So, it was up to chopie’s bestie to send her away from the world of drive-throughs and greasy sandwiches in style, and she didn’t disappoint (see above).

Honestly, what more could you ask for in a best friend? That girl really knows how to say “you’re special” while also saying “you’re dead to us” in such a subtle way.
